What's the best route from Birmingham to Gulf Shores?

I-65 south through Montgomery, continue past Mobile, exit east onto I-10, then exit south onto Highway 59. Highway 59 runs straight to Gulf Shores and dumps you onto Beach Boulevard. The route is full interstate the entire way except the last 25 miles down 59, which is four-lane state highway with gas, food, and pit stops at every exit. Total: 325 miles, about 5 hours of road time before traffic.

When should you leave Birmingham to avoid summer traffic?

The two real pinch points are I-65 around Mobile (afternoon southbound rush) and Highway 59 from I-10 to Foley (every beach-bound car funnels through one road for the last hour of your drive). Leaving Birmingham before 8 a.m. on Friday avoids both. Saturday morning is the cleanest drive of the weekend. The drive you absolutely don't want is Sunday afternoon northbound on Highway 59 — every condo emptying at once. If your booking ends Sunday and your schedule has any flex, leaving Monday morning is night-and-day better.

Is it worth flying instead of driving?

For most Birmingham trips, no. We could not verify a current nonstop BHM-to-GUF route. BHM-to-Pensacola or BHM-to-Mobile itineraries can work for some travelers, but you still need the rental-car drive to Gulf Shores. Connecting itineraries can turn a short beach trip into a full airport day.
